A couple of years ago I bought an old café set at a garage sale. Now it finally got a makeover!
Our basement is mostly used for storage and it used to be full of furniture like this. I have since decided to reclaim our basement and have been trying to get rid of it all. When I re-discovered this old set I just couldn’t part with it so I dusted it off and set it out in our yard.
I spent a few weeks staring at it, trying to decide what to do with it.
It wasn’t in terrible shape. The wood was still solid.
and the metal was a bit rusty, but only on the surface.
I took to the internet with a proposed color scheme and got the thumbs up on Facebook an Instagram. (Thanks for your help! J)
I was kinda making this up as I went along, so I started with the most neutral color in the mix (neutral also means it’s fairly easy to paint over without needing lots of coats) and painted the whole thing really well to ensure it was thoroughly sealed.
Then I tried to get creative. I used 3 different sizes of tape to mark off stripes that would remain grey, then painted over the whole thing with the next color. I repeated this process over and over again, trying to be strategic about the spacing (and without removing the previous tape layers). When I finally painted the last color, I held my breath and crossed my fingers, hoping that I would find the results I was hoping for…
I could not have been more pleased when I peeled off all that tape! Just look at those awesome stripes!
The rest of the set was pretty straight forward.
The wood and metal separated with the removal of a few screws so I took them apart.
I sprayed the metal,
and separately sprayed each of the seats.
The whole things was done with spray paint because, let’s face it, I obsessed with spray paint.
but also, spray paint is a great choice for outdoors.
I’m pretty geeked about my cute new café table!
